Why hemp?
Industrial hemp is a renewable, carbon-sequestering material that produces walls that breathe, resist fire, mold, and pests, and naturally regulate temperature. These properties make it uniquely suited for Hawai‘i’s humid, tropical climate where conventional homes often deteriorate rapidly.

About Hemp Hale Initiative
The Hemp Hale Initiative is a Hawai‘i-based nonprofit focused on solving the state’s housing crisis by building affordable, durable homes using industrial hemp construction. The Initiative’s mission is to create lasting housing solutions for families in Hawaii, beginning with those on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) parcels while training a new generation of builders through hands-on apprenticeship.
Workforce
The Initiative partners with the Ho‘ākeolapono Trades Academy to deliver a 12-week paid, on-site training program. Ho‘ākeolapono manages apprentice payroll and compliance while Hemp Hale provides the live job sites and mentorship. The construction sites themselves serve as the classroom. Apprentices earn while they learn—mixing hemp, framing walls, and completing builds alongside experienced carpenters.
Each crew includes one lead carpenter, one journeyman, and three apprentices, supported by rotating interns from the Academy. This approach combines mentorship with efficiency and keeps wages circulating in the local economy.
Environmental Impact
Industrial hemp captures carbon during growth and continues to store it within completed walls. Each 200-square-foot studio build will sequester several tons of CO₂ while producing almost no construction waste. The material’s natural resistance to mold, fire, and termites extends home lifespan and reduces the need to rebuild every few decades. It is one of the largest waste drivers in Hawai‘i’s housing cycle.
